Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in NYC
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a time-limited, empirically supported treatment for a wide range of problems including depression, anxiety, worry, relationship conflicts, eating disorders and substance abuse. CBT is based on the assumption that beliefs, behaviors, and emotions are interrelated. It is a collaborative, present-focused approach to problematic behaviors, thinking patterns, and emotions. CBT therapists take an active, in-session stance to teach clients skills that can be used to improve current functioning.
What differentiates CBT from other therapies?
Six distinctive processes have been found to generally differentiate CBT from psychodynamic therapies (Blagys & Hilseroth, 2002). First, cognitive behavioral therapists are more active than therapists of other orientations, speaking more often and guiding session discussions. Second, CBT is predominantly focused on the present rather than the past or childhood experiences. Third, cognitive behavioral therapists focus on the client’s thoughts and beliefs. Fourth, CBT employs homework assignments to promote the generalization of skills learned in sessions. Fifth, cognitive behavioral therapists teach skills to reduce and manage symptoms. Sixth, cognitive behavioral therapists provide information about the client’s disorder and the rationale for treatment.
